Serial Fiction FAQ

Don’t you write books? What are serials?

In this context, serials are basically advance-access novels. I’m writing the same books but releasing them as they’re written in the form of “episodes.”

Each episode is a downloadable epub file that is yours to keep forever, with simple but easy-to-read formatting and no cover art. Episode length will vary depending on the arc of the story, but word count will always be disclosed.

Can I still read your stories if I don’t follow the serials?

Yes! Serials are an addition to the books I already write, not a replacement. When the books are complete, I will put them together, format them beautifully, and make them available through eBook retailers at standard novel pricing, just like you’re used to.

What’s the point of this?

I’m gonna be honest—I have ADHD, and my brain is a bit scattershot at the best of times. Serializing novels keeps me accountable, which means I actually finish novels. It lets readers read the parts of ongoing series I do already have written without waiting 3 years to finish the rest of it (looking at you, Witchblood Heir #4), and it’s just… fun.

It’s fun to be able to experience a story with you all in real-time, as it’s happening.

How does episode pricing work?

I am still figuring this out. Currently, episodes are priced at $2.99. My best guess is that when I have enough episodes, I will make discounted bundles that make it easier for new readers to catch up without breaking hearts or wallets. (And of course existing readers are encouraged to wait for these bundles if they’d rather do so, as well)

That seems a little steep!

I know! And I’m sorry. But the truth is that I get eaten alive on payment processor fees at $0.99, and this is a weird balancing act. I want to be fair to you while still being able to make a living. If you can and want to support my stories as they’re written, I am so grateful! If you can’t, I am still grateful for you, and I hope you can enjoy my stories in other ways, like the novels I have already published or some of the free shorts available on my site.

I never want to gatekeep readers based on income, so this is an experiment and a balancing act, and I will try to keep refining to best suit everyone’s needs.
